Freak
She is trapped in a world not of her making
Unable to lead a normal life, unable to go past the front door
She is a misfit in today’s society
Fashion dictates that everyone must be perfect and she is far from perfect
She is the face of death
All of her life she has been passed like a piece of rubbish from one person to the next
She didn’t ask for this, she never asked to be born this way
She is a victim of this cruel world
She is unable to get a job
No one wants to employ her
She is used to having doors slammed in her face
People are unable to look at her
They just point and stare in horror, close their eyes and walk away
She is a freak
A monster
She hates life and the people who brought her into this world
Her parents gave her up not long after birth
They could not stand to look at her face
Passed from one home to another she soon started to feel unwanted and unloved
People come to visit but they are gone within seconds
They are unable to cope with what stands in front of them
She spends most of her days alone
She is no better than a prisoner in her cell
In the mirror the view isn’t pretty
She has got used to it now
At first even she couldn’t bare to look
She used to get angry or cry but neither did any good
She used to pray that one day she would wake up normal
As the months became years she gave up believing in miracles
Each day she remains disfigured and ugly
It is as if she is being punished in some way
Maybe in some sick way there was a purpose to her being born like this?
As a small child she didn’t realise that there was anything wrong
As an adult the world is against her
If she were an animal the authorities would have her put down
It would be the kindest thing to do all round
As a human being she is made to suffer every day, there is no let up to her pain
There are no explanations for her defects
There is no one to lash out at or blame
She is a living and breathing freak of nature
She is only twenty-three – will she have to spend the rest of her life living in the shadows unwanted and locked away from the rest of society?
This piece was inspired by lots of different things including the way we as a society treat people who are different from us for one reason or another.
