Becky Rose Song Review

Highly talented singer/songwriter Becky Rose is currently studying hard at Worcester sixth form-college whilst also finding the time to write songs and gig wherever/whenever she can. Becky’s music is edgy with a strange darkness about it. There are times when Becky’s vocals take on a haunting, ghostly sound and others when it sounds light and airy. Occasionally Becky’s vocals take on a classical almost soprano feel. Her music combines an exciting mix of indie, progressive and emo sounds together. The result is something quite breathtaking and highly spectacular. It is a real treat to listen to Becky’s songs and to hear her raw and also at times very dramatic vocals. Listening to Becky sing it is clear that she was born to perform. Her songs are infectious and so entertaining. Her vocal style changes effortlessly from song to song and even from verse to verse. At times listening to her music I am reminded of the likes of Sarah Brightman and at others Portishead. There is also a strong similarity between Becky’s vocals and those of the acclaimed No Doubt front woman and now solo artist Gwen Stefani. Saying that it is hard to pigeon hole Becky’s music in any way – this I feel is a good thing as there is too much manufactured music around these days. Becky’s latest offering is a five track EP, which showcases for me Becky’s enormous talents as well as her wonderful style. The EP starts off with Lets Get Fun a song about the break-up or deterioration of a relationship. The backing music has a very electronic feel. The song sees Becky in full angst mood. The lyrics are thoroughly modern and there is a definite message being put across in this song. The second song on the EP is entitled The Dress in My Wardrobe. This is a piano driven song that sounds absolutely amazing; in fact it is hard to find enough words to describe this song. Basically it is mesmerising! Becky starts off the song sounding like a show singer on the big stage. I can easily picture her singing in an Andrew Lloyd Webber production. The chorus is haunting and as Becky’s vocals take on a softer feel, as a listener, you cannot help falling head over heels in love with this song. I love the way the lyrics compare a man and his failings in the relationship department to an unworn dress. The music becomes more punctuated as the song progresses adding more drama and atmosphere to the number. The song is so good the listener will not want it to end. Song number three is a catchy number and perhaps a possible single in the future? It has ‘big hit’ written all over it. It is a very striking song that you soon find yourself singing along to. Obsession starts off slowly with some gentle backing music but it soon builds up into something quite brilliant. Becky’s vocals are quite high pitched on this song, hence the earlier reference to Sarah Brightman. The chorus sees the vocals become deeper and more pronounced. The song fits together perfectly like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. I am sure many listeners will be able to relate to the lyrics of this song, I for one can certainly relate to the lyrics – lusting after someone so much that it becomes an obsession. This is a long song – going on for well over five minutes, but the time just flies by as the song is of such quality. I like that Becky’s vocals have retained quite an organic raw feel. They are not over produced in any way. Listeners will come away feeling uplifted and refreshed after listening to this EP. I for one did! Mind you it was only a few minutes before the EP had another airing and another one after that and so on. Becky creates with her songs an energy that is rare to find in music these days. She brings the listener along for the ride and it is the ride of a lifetime. That Old Routine has a fun feel about it right from the punchy start. The music has an old fashioned music hall sound to it that lulls the listener into thinking that this is going to be a light breezy song. When Becky starts singing you realise that this is anything but. Becky changes up her vocal styles throughout this song. The verses see Becky full of angst once again; the choruses are slightly lighter and have a catchy vibe. The EP ends all too soon with a song called Noises. A long musical introduction sets the scene for this interesting song. Becky’s vocals start off sounding like you are listening to an old forty-five. It is here that the group Portishead comes to mind. By the chorus however similarities between Portishead and Becky Rose go right out of the window. The mood changes up a gear and Becky’s vocals once again become harsher. This EP takes the listener on a magical and fun filled angst driven ride. It showcases Becky’s obvious musical talents and allows the listener to get a preview of what is to come in the future. If Becky Rose is not a hugely rated star in a few years time with her face on many magazines I will be shocked and surprised. With this tantalising taste of Becky’s musical styles and songs I for one am longing for a full album. I cannot wait!!!!!
