Freya - Song Review

There are some artists who sound the same on every song they release and there are others who bring something totally different to each and every song. Freyia is one such artist who brings something new and exciting to everything she does. Her music blends effortlessly together pop, rock, dance, electronica and alternative to create something blissful and almost other worldly.

The name ‘Freya’ in German and Scandinavian mythology relates to the goddess of Vana and states that Freya is a priestess. The singer Freyia may well spell her name differently from the Freya mentioned in mythology but her music certainly has an element of mythology and other worldliness sprinkled throughout it.

Freyia has an interest in mythology and religion and has perused this interest in her studies graduating from the University of Foreign Languages and Literatures, where her final thesis was aptly entitled ‘The Feminine Element in the Scandinavian Mythology’.

Freyia has delicate features and is extremely pretty in a natural way. It would not be hard to take one look at Freyia and wonder if she was once indeed a priestess or goddess – she has the look of one certainly.

Freyia’s musical interests were ignited at a very early age. At the age of three Freyia was given a harmonica from her grandfather. At the age of ten she was given a guitar.

Freyia’s music allows her to express herself through words set to music. At first Freyia sang with some bands and composed songs. It is easy to see where Freyia’s influences come from. At first her songs were filled with Scandinavian and Lappish traditional folk themes and music. As time moved on Freyia adapted her influences and her music became more focussed on Scandinavian gothic music although there were still many undertones of traditional folk music shinning through in her songs.

Freyia continued her musical education studying practically and theoretically Lappish singing. The techniques Freyia learnt appeared in her first single Mist.

Freyia is working towards releasing an album of her music and has already released several more singles following the success of Mist and the air play it received on radio stations like BBC Radio One. Mist was in fact released in fourteen countries all over the world.

I wonder to myself how it is that Freyia is such a hidden talent when she has so much to offer and her music has been played on national radio and released world wide. Listeners of good music are missing out on so much by not hearing Freyia’s delightful and currently available singles. I can only imagine how great a full of album of her work will be.

Mist has a dreamlike quality about it. Freyia’s voice is delicate and beautiful. There is a lot of character and emotion in Freyia’s vocal style. The way the harmonies in this song over lap allow the song to take on a haunting quality. Mist is a quality offering that showcases Freyia’s overwhelming talents. Freyia’s Lappish skills are evident in this song if you listen closely. The Cicada remix of Mist gives the song a more upbeat lively feel. Obviously more focussed on entertaining people on the dance floor this remixed version is still charming and Freyia’s vocals are still allowed to shine but in a much lighter way than on the original version of the song.

Rain Of Time is a fast-paced song with a dance beat. Freyia’s vocals are exceptional on this catchy song. Although a pop song there are still many traditional elements infused into this powerful number. The unplugged version of this song shows it off in a totally different light. Gone is the dance music replaced by a gentle musical backing. Freyia’s vocals on this unplugged version of the song are perfect and so magical. Freyia’s vocals really capture the heart. Listening to the warming vocals of Freyia and the lovely backing music I am moved to tears. It is interesting to see how such an emotive song can easily slip into a dance song without much effort just a few changes in musical backing. A version to suit all kinds of listeners!

On The Ground is Freyia’s latest single. Again there are several versions of this song available. There is an up beat version of this song and an unplugged version that I think listeners will fall head over heels in love with as it sounds so beautiful and so evocative. The vocals are haunting and have many traditional elements to them. These qualities are sadly lost on the original version of the song but that doesn’t mean that the original version of the song isn’t any good. I personally love both versions of this amazing song. Freyia cleverly blends pop with folk to create something stunning and different. It is hard to compare Freyia and her musical talents with any other female singers around today. Her talents reflect elements of many modern singers but they offer so much more as well and that is the interesting thing about this young singer.

Massive is again available in many formats to keep all kinds of listeners happy. The highlight for me is listening once again to Freyia’s amazing vocals which captivate and enthral me as a listener. There is so much depth and rawness to them. They omit such a lot of passion and energy. It is a real pleasure to listen to Freyia’s music as it is firstly so fantastic and secondly it has a calming influence over the listeners mind.

Overall Freyia’s songs offer listeners so much. They are not just songs they are magical interludes, taking the listener to a place where for a few minutes they can escape from their troubles and the pace of real life into a world of ecstasy and raw organic energy.

I am so looking forward to the release of Freyia’s album. A whole album packed full of this kind of music – the thought just blows me away!
