Sarah MacDougall EP Review

I Don’t Want To Be Alone Anymore is an EP created especially for the Atlantic Crossing tour by Canadian singer/songwriter Sarah MacDougall. It features six charming songs packed full of atmospheric lyrics and haunting vocals.

Across The Atlantic gets the EP started in fantastic style. This is a warming song with a traditional country feel to it. Strong lyrics give the song added depth and a raw honesty. Sarah’s voice has a distinctive edge to it that gives her songs a character all of their own and makes her stand out from the usual crowd of singer/songwriters that flood the market.

Crow’s Lament is a delightful song with great guitar work. Quirky lyrics make this song move a long at a fast pace – ‘where do the birds go to die, I once saw one under a tree, I never saw one fall from the sky’. This song has a continental feel to it and even though the lyrics are quite dark the song seems quite jolly and light. This song encompasses all that is good in a song – a memorable chorus, vibrant music, strong lyrics and breathtaking vocals.

Cry Wolf is another lively track that soon has your feet tapping the floor in time to the music. Like the opening track there is a traditional country feel to this song both in the vocal style and the music. A flourish of music at the end of the song really brings the track to life.

I’ve Got Sorrow is a brilliant track that is packed full of emotion and heartache. This is a song to play when you are feeling down on your luck or reminiscing over a failed romance. A song to sing a long to when you are knocking back a few alcoholic beverages down the pub, hoping the contents of the glass will swallow you up. The lyrics are simple yet very poignant and the music is unobtrusive yet strangely alluring and powerful. This is a song that will easily bring a tear to the listener’s eye. Personally I adore this song.

I’ve Got Your Back follows on in a similar vain to I’ve Got Sorrow. This is another song full of great lyrics, heart warming music and haunting vocals that quickly infiltrate the heart. Sarah seems to exude emotion in every word that she sings. She seems to have a knack for getting under the listener’s skin and into their hearts and souls.

Ramblin is the final track on the EP and is another slow traditional country sounding song. Gentle music and soft vocals bring this song to life and set it apart from the rest of the songs on the EP. This song oozes with emotion once again. Sarah uses simple repetitive lyrics here, which are extremely good at capturing the mood of the song. This is a delightfully fine crafted song to end on.

Each and every one of the songs on this six track EP are brilliant in their own way. They show what a great talent Sarah MacDougall has for both singing and song writing. These are simple charming songs full of hidden delights and emotions. The listener is literally blown away upon hearing heartfelt songs like I’ve Got Your Back and I’ve Got Sorrow. Listening to these songs is like being transported back to a time when songs had a real passion and depth to them. These tracks offer listener’s a glimpse of a talented singer/song writer who can truly captivate the heart with her voice. Six little gems wrapped up on one divine EP!
