Christmas past and present effortlessly rolled into one
Having released their first full length album this year the Good Lovelies are back with an album packed full of Christmas songs. This is a Christmas album with a bit of a twist. Many of the songs are Christmas classics but they are given a make over Good Lovelies style. The album also features a few new Christmas songs. The album gets off to an amazing start with a jazz infused version of the Christmas favourite Santa Baby. Listening to this song it is like you have slipped back in time. Caroline, Kerry and Sue certainly put their own stamp on this popular song. Their vocals are sultry and sexy. God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen is given a western swing make over again with a sprinkling of jazz; the end result is different and unusual but also strangely likeable. Mele Kalikimaka is an upbeat song, which has a strong western swing influence once again. Hurry Home is a lovely country/bluegrass song with luxurious vocals and strong traditional musical backing. Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree is given a slight make over. The song takes on a bluegrass feel, which works well. Maybe This Time is a gorgeous song. The vocals are warming and infectious. This is a real highlight! The Chipmunk Song sees the three ladies performing some great harmonies. Another Year To Wait is an amazing song with a strong country influence. I’d Like You For Christmas has a jazz/country feel. I am reminded here of Shelby Lynne. Once again the vocals are highly polished and quite intoxicating. Blue Christmas is given a country make over. This is a lovely version of this classic Christmas song. Silent Night is sung perfectly by the group. The song still retains all its usual classic Christmas features all that has been added is the voice of three talented angels. A stunning version of this song. The album ends with Auld Lang Syne, which has been given a strong country make over. The song has been slowed down allowing the voices of the three ladies to shine and that they most certainly do. This is an excellent version of the song and a fitting end to what can only be described as a magical tribute to Christmas past and present.
