Steph Stephenson Song Review

Steph Stephenson is a highly talented young singer/songwriter who is working on releasing her first album. Her music blends folk, rock and pop together and creates something that is both enjoyable to listen to but is also full of angst and emotion.

Beautiful Girl is full of lovely lyrics; it is packed full of angst and nicely blends pop and rock together. The song sees many tempo changes, which add character to the song and give it an added depth. Steph’s voice is strong throughout.

All Along The Way is another pop/rock song that has a rousing chorus. There is once again a nice change of tempo in this song between verse and chorus. Steph’s voice seems to swap easily between loud and rousing and soft and gentle. Her vocals are husky and powerful. Her vocals are strangely similar to those of Lin McEwan.

Nightmares is a really striking song that stands out for many reasons. It has some lovely guitar work and is extremely dramatic and atmospheric. Steph’s vocals and the backing music really give this song an added dimension. As a listener you almost feel like you are trapped in a nightmare.

Trying Till I Die allows Steph to show off her husky voice once again. This song starts off nice and slow, and then goes up a gear as it reaches the chorus before changing down a gear once again for the next verse. This is another stand out song with fantastic lyrics that will really strike a chord with most listeners. I personally love this song. It is one of those songs you will want to play over and over again to get the full impact. Steph’s vocals are crisp and clear here, yet still full of angst. Many female singer/songwriters spring to mind on listening to this song including Jewel, Joan Osborne and Tracy Chapman.

In Between Dimensions is a folk/pop infused song with a dramatic sound. The verses have little instrumental backing, but the music steps up a gear when the chorus is reached. I am reminded here of the early work of Jewel. Melissa Ferrick would not seem out of place singing this excellent song. This would be an excellent song performed live as it is full of atmosphere and emotion.
