Kari Smith - Kari CD Review

Kari Smith
Kari
Self-released
****
An amazing debut album from a talented Nashville based singer/songwriterKari Smith’s self-titled debut album contains ten original songs, which feature Kari on vocals and piano. Kari is joined by Matt Roberts on acoustic and electric guitar and Luis Ferreira on percussion and drums. This is a strong debut album, which shows a lot of promise. Kari’s vocals are highly polished and well worth a listen. Kari’s favourite musical artists include the likes of Mindy Smith, Alison Krauss, Emily West, Sara Bareiles and Patty Griffin. Listening to her music it is easy to see how she has incorporated these artists’ influences into her own music. The album starts off with Blue. A song about love and the problems love brings. A charming up beat song with gentle instrumentation. Happy Ain’t A Man has heavier backing and steps things up a gear. Kari’s vocals are crisp and clear throughout. Whisper, also featured on Kari’s second album, is a gorgeous song reminiscent in style of The Judds. There is a lovely traditional feel about this song. Where Did You Go has a strong country feel. Lovely lyrics bring this song to life. This song makes me think I am listening to a Mary Chapin Carpenter CD minus Mary Chapin Carpenter – Kari is that good particularly when performing a slow ballad. Inside is a more pop/blues infused number. Kari’s vocals have a velvety quality on this song. This is music at its very best. Her Truk is a fast paced song soaked in country music. I think Kari’s love of Emily West has rubbed off on her here. Give And Take once again has a soulful blues sound. Kari’s raspy vocals really engage the listener. Be The One sees Kari take to the piano. This is a blissful ballad of the highest quality. Why Wait For The Night reminds me in style of Mary Karlzen. This song has a real unplugged acoustic feel. The final song on this debut album is a real gem. One of the best ballads to come out of Nashville in years, in my opinion anyway. The Moon is a stunning song that shows just how good a song writer and singer Kari really is. Pure perfection in a song!
