An enjoyable mixed bag
A new name on the country music scene is Gretchen Pittman. Her debut album ONCE IN A LIFETIME combines country with blues, jazz, pop and rock. Much of Gretchen’s music has a really traditional sound and this is echoed on the opening song Am I The Next In Line. Gretchen sounds a lot older than her years on this upbeat song. My Dad allows Gretchen to show off her amazing vocals. Her voice has a lovely tone, which translates through her music as warmth and tenderness. Just Give Me One More Chance is a more modern song with an upbeat feel. I am reminded of Carlene Carter here. The backing music during the chorus of this song is a little crazy but Gretchen’s vocals will easily hold any listeners attention. I Love The Rain is a slow country song. Gretchen’s vocals are delightful to listen to. Love Can Do Funny Things To You is a thoroughly modern song with a touch of jazz and blues. The music is buoyant and the rhythm is upbeat making this a catchy song. Arrivederci Baby is a rocky rousing song, which will probably appeal more to fans of modern country. On the Good Side Of You is an up-tempo song with an infectious hook. The title song Once In A Lifetime is an amazing song, very much worthy of its position on the album. Gretchen really pours her heart and soul into this song, which has a strong country feel tinged with a little bit of roots and soul. The final song on the album Your Very Last Goodbye is an upbeat modern country song. Gretchen’s vocals are once again spot on. This is an enjoyable album and a real mixed bag of offerings. Gretchen’s vocals make this album stand out and tantalise listeners with the prospect of many good things to come.
